Das Stue - فندق فاخر - Helmut Newton Foundation

In October 2003, Helmut Newton founded the Helmut Newton Foundation, which has since been housed in a former Prussian officers’ casino in Berlin-Charlottenburg.
As an international foundation with global reach, the Helmut Newton Foundation is dedicated to the study and presentation of the photographic work of Helmut and June Newton, who have created a significant, independent body of work under the pseudonym Alice Springs since the 1970s.

In line with Helmut Newton’s vision, the eponymous foundation should be a “living institution, not a dead museum”. The different aspects of Newton’s extraordinary photographic work are presented in six-monthly rotations alongside the work of other renowned photographers. Examples of this dialogue include juxtapositions with David LaChapelle and James Nachtwey, Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson, Greg Gorman and Frank Horvat, Mario Testino and Guy Bourdin, Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi, David Lynch and Saul Leiter – and this dialogue continues.

These consistently well-received exhibitions have established the Helmut Newton Foundation as an important part of Berlin’s cultural scene and a popular destination for international visitors. In close cooperation with C/O Berlin and the Photography Collection of the Art Library, these three photography institutions form a unique cluster of photography venues at Berlin Zoo station. The European Month of Photography also took place in both venues in autumn 2016 and 2018.

Since its founding, the Helmut Newton Foundation has organised presentations in Berlin and loaned complete exhibitions to other renowned museums and institutions, including Amsterdam (Foam), Budapest (Museum of Fine Arts), Genoa (Palazzo Ducale), Houston (Museum of Fine Arts), Milan (Palazzo Reale), Munich (Hypo-Kunsthalle), Paris (Grand Palais), Rome (Palazzo delle Esposizioni), Stockholm (Fotografiska), Venice (Tre Oci), or Montreal (Museum of Fine Arts). This exhibition practice in Berlin and elsewhere will continue in the future.
